Assignment B

Lighting and Texturing an Onion

Texture images created with Photoshop

Above left: scan for the bulb texture. It was created from a scan of a rolled onion on a scanner. This rolled scanned was cropped for a good region, rubber stamped to cover up various blemishes, and resized to 1024 x 1024 pixels. The texture was offset by 150 pixels in the horizontal direction and the seam covered.

Above right: a hand painted bump map texture airbrushed within photoshop as a rectangle and then resized to 1024 x 1024 pixels.

Above left: the scan of the onion bottom was cropped in half, part of it was rubberstamped on the right side to create the texture map for the bottom bud of the onion. It was offset by 10 pixels in the vertical direction and the seam covered.

Above right:
the image on the left was desaturated in photoshop and the contrast reduced to create a bump map.

Above left:
I used the scan of the roots to select several straight areas of the root texture and brought them in to a new file seen above. Rubber stamped the seams between the different root textures. I offset the texture by 150 pixels in the horizontal direction and covered the seam.

Above right: The texture on the left was desaturated and the contrast reduced to create the bump map on the right.

Above left: I used the close up scan of the onion stem to create the stem texture for the onion. I selected a straight region and copied it into a new file. Then I copied the pasted segment several times, and rubber stamped the seams. The texture was offset 150 pixels in the horizontal and the seam covered.

Above right: I used the photograph of the dishwasher counter top to create the texture for the surface the onion is sitting on. I simply cropped it to 1024 x 1024 pixels, offset the texture by 150 pixels in both the vertical and horizontal directions, and rubberstamped the seams.

Above left: I scanned another onion which had drier skin on the outside for the loose onion peel texture. I rolled the onion in this scan also. Cropped to 1024 x 1024, rubberstamped blemishes, offset 150 pixels in the horizontal, and 150 in the vertical. Then rubberstamped the seams.

Above right: This is a specular map created from the photograph of the onion with the strong highlight. I cropped the highlight area to 512 x 512, desaturated the image, lowered the contrast, offset in the horizontal and the vertical and then rubberstamped the seams.
